Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering is the subject of priority choice of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University. The term Biotechnology means any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use and Genetic engineering is the technology entailing all processes of altering the genetic material of a cell to make it capable of performing the desired functions, such as producing novel substances. For the better use of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering for mankind and to meet the challenge of globalization MBSTU launched the academic activity of this Department from the year 2006.

Establishment

Academic council of MBSTU in its 3rd meeting (held on 27.10.2004) recommended the proposal for opening our department which was then approved in 116th Regent Board meeting (held on 02.11.04). Finally University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) gave approval on 23.05.2005, which is our birthday. The academic activity of the department was started from 2005-2006 session with only 04 teachers and 50 students. The first departmental Chairman was appointed on 10.07.2005.

Course Curriculum

At present the Department offers a 4-year program of Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. The curriculum of B. Sc. (Hons.) course in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering was designed keeping in mind the objective of the course and after thorough revision of leading national and foreign universities and consideration of the opinions of national pioneer and experts of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. The course consists of 160 credit hours of study and the whole curriculum was divided into eight different parts to cover in eight subsequent semesters. Here,
1 credit = 14 lectures, 1 lecture = 50 minutes
1 semester = 14 weeks, 1 week = 5 working days

Resources and Lab Facilities of BGE Department

The Department has a spacious lounge, office room with internet facility, 03(three) modern class rooms with multimedia facility and a rich seminar library. For conducting sessional /labs classes the department has one laboratory rich in ultra modern equipments such as PCR, Gel electrophoresis, Gel Documentation System, Autoclave, Oven, Centrifuge, UV/Vis spectrophotometer, ELISA, Microcentrifuge, Laminar air Flow cabinet, Electric Microscope and so on. We are trying our best to establish another two research lab within few days.
